Gone is the tiresome stealthy gameplay of the campaign; instead, this mode has 12 arenas for 8 to 12 players that focus on such Bond-themed objectives as killing enemy players with Goldfinger's golden gun or retrieving data from a downed spy plane, all while capering around as iconic Bond personalities. It's a pity, then, that there's no one around. Only a week after Legends' release, the servers are consistently empty, which makes the return of the beloved four-player split-screen mode from GoldenEye 007: Reloaded all the more worthwhile. Decent, too, is Legends' Challenge mode with its specific objectives, which adds some meaning and urgency to campaign levels that were too dull in their own right. Sherlock Homes has never been more gruesome. The Testament of Sherlock Holmes, the sixth installment in developer Frogwares' long-running series of adventures starring Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's celebrated detective and his sidekick, Watson, kicks off with the discovery of a mutilated corpse. It then proceeds through suicides, another mutilated corpse, poisoned dogs, an autopsy, an opium den, and a generally desolate atmosphere that is a long way from the drawing-room mystery style of this usually all-ages franchise. It might not be the best of the line, given the very high bar set by Sherlock Holmes: The Awakened back in 2006. But the macabre plot, severe characterizations that show Sherlock as an antihero, and lovely graphics combine to make this a mesmerizing adventure. It's awesome that you can have 1860s-era forces fighting next to modern troops. The problem is that the older historical combatants are no match for their futuristic counterparts. For example, tanks can steamroll most opponents with ease, making quick work of cavalry and foot soldiers. The weapon system is half-baked too. Infantry carry different gear, like grenades, guns, and sabers. These armaments appear at random, and though it looks like there are multiple slots on the HUD for carrying more than one weapon at a time, the ability to pick them up and switch between them hasn't been implemented. It just isn't rewarding to play weaker units, and the impreciseness of many attacks means shots don't always line up or connect well even when you're rolling with the big guns.
