Trine 2's physics engine is robust and fine tuned, and noodling about with it is engrossing in its own right. The game is generously rigged to allow for the guilty pleasure of fudging a solution when the elegant answer is out of reach; teetering structures of magic planks can be used to bypass clever gate mechanisms altogether or the same planks can be jammed gracelessly into the gears. On the other hand, three of the four skiing events and the snowmobile race all control extremely poorly. For both downhill and freestyle skiing, moving your torso left or right nearly always results in the character moving too much in that direction. Then in paraskiing, sometimes the skier goes up a mountain rather than down it. However, seeing the jet stream intended to push the character downward and being able to go against it is more comical than frustrating. A similar situation occurs during some snowmobile races where your vehicle changes direction without notice. Even more important are the capacity cores, which are collectible items that can be equipped on characters. These capacity cores give a character a stat bonus in certain areas (different for each core), meaning that you can equip cores to shape your character in a certain way. One core could improve a character's regular attack and defence, for example, while another could do the same but for artes. The capacity cores also allow characters to learn AD skills, essentially perks that take the form of bonuses or special moves, which can be equipped or disabled in the menu. When we last left The King of Fighters, things weren't looking good. The King of Fighters XII, which was released in 2009, looked beautiful and had a solid fighting system, but its dearth of single-player content and busted online functionally killed it for many players. Now, The King of Fighters XIII is here, and it addresses all of the issues the previous installment faced. XIII is an immensely robust game that adds a lot a new content to XII's solid mechanics, and it easily earns this series the right to stand alongside other fighting giants in the genre's spotlight. Your traps can also be upgraded by spending the skulls you earn at the end of each stage. The better your performance, the more skulls you get. Unlike the skills, these upgrades are permanent and improve the trap in a specific way. The brimstone trap, for example, can be improved so that when enemies pass over it and catch fire, they burn longer. A constant string of new traps and enemy types keeps you interested to see what the next challenge will bring. However, it is disappointing that this variety doesn't carry over to the stage designs, which all look very similar. Deca Sports Extreme uses 3D with varying results. Tennis and blowdarts use 3D favorably, thanks in part to their use of depth of field, but the team-based sports like hockey and basketball are a mess. Not only do they look bad, but they also suffer from a camera that has a hard time tracking the action, and in many situations, your characters are positioned in such a way that you don't get the best view of the action. In basketball, for example, it can be difficult at times to see what's going on, and the game slows down to a crawl because too much is happening at once. Therefore, sensible use of reconnaissance units is important. Furthermore, vehicles can get temporarily bogged down in harsh terrain like swamps. Roads are important because they allow for quicker movement and better fuel efficiency, but they can be death traps for your armored column if they run past dense woods packed with enemy antitank infantry. Blitzing through open countryside may seem like a convenient way to avoid certain obstacles, but helicopters more than 2,000 meters away may see your forces and open up on them with rocket pods and antitank guided missiles.
